The caption box works — words are flowing — but it is glued to the worst possible spot on your screen, and no amount of dragging moves it. Or it is half off-screen after you undocked your laptop, and the visible sliver refuses to budge.
The captions window is a lightweight overlay, and overlays do not always play by normal window rules. Its drag handle can stop responding when the process stalls, its saved position can point somewhere that no longer exists, and display scaling changes can wedge it into a corner. The fixes below get it moving again, from keyboard tricks to full position resets.
A frozen caption UI can also signal that the underlying AI pipeline is stuck rather than just the window — if captions never transcribe either, check whether apps are failing to use the NPU on your machine.
Why this happens
- Unresponsive captions process: When LiveCaptions.exe stalls, the window stops processing mouse drag events even though the text keeps updating for a while.
- Corrupt saved position: The box remembers its last coordinates. If those were saved while a second monitor was connected, they can point off-screen after you undock.
- Display scaling mismatch: Changing scaling (100% to 150%, for example) recalculates the box’s hit area incorrectly, so your drags land outside the real window frame.
- Pinned-state conflict: A rare state bug leaves the box flagged as both pinned and immovable; toggling the pin usually clears it.
- Third-party window managers: Tools that snap, tile, or manage windows can hook the caption overlay and block its dragging.
- Touch vs mouse input confusion: On 2-in-1s, the box sometimes responds to touch drag but not mouse drag (or vice versa) after a driver hiccup.
How to fix it
Work through these in order — diagnose first, then act.
Fix 1: Restart the captions process to restore dragging
A stalled process is the most common reason the drag handle dies. A fresh process gets a fresh, responsive window — and this also fixes the box if it has become generally sluggish.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find LiveCaptions, right-click it, and choose End task.
- Wait five seconds, then press Win+Ctrl+L to launch captions again.
- Try dragging the box by its empty area (not the text) to a new spot.
- If it drags now, the old process had simply stopped handling input.
Fix 2: Move it with the keyboard between monitors
When the mouse will not cooperate, the keyboard bypasses the drag handle entirely. This is also the fastest rescue for a box stranded on a disconnected monitor.
- Click the caption box once so it has focus.
- Press Win+Shift+Left Arrow or Win+Shift+Right Arrow to throw it to another monitor.
- Repeat until it lands on your main display, then try dragging it normally.
- If the Win+Ctrl+L shortcut itself feels dead too, note that shortcut conflicts are a separate issue — for example the broken Win+C Copilot shortcut shows how one stuck hotkey can cascade.
Fix 3: Change display scaling to unstick the position
A temporary scaling change forces Windows to recalculate every window’s position and hit area, which unwedges boxes trapped by stale coordinates.
- Open Settings > System > Display and note your current scale (e.g., 150%).
- Change it to a different value (e.g., 125%), wait for the screen to redraw, then change it back.
- Check whether the caption box has jumped to a visible, draggable spot.
- Drag it where you want it and pin it there if you like it on top.
Fix 4: Toggle the pin and reset the window state
The pin control rewrites the window’s style flags. Cycling it clears the rare “pinned and immovable” state and gives the box a clean set of window properties.
- Launch captions so the box is visible and click its pin icon to unpin it.
- Try dragging the unpinned box to the center of the screen.
- Click the pin icon again to re-pin it if you want always-on-top behavior.
- Confirm the box now drags freely in both pinned and unpinned states.
Fix 5: Disconnect from the interfering setup
If the box froze right after docking, undocking, or connecting a display, simplify the setup temporarily so Windows stops juggling coordinates.
- Disconnect external monitors and docks, leaving just the laptop screen.
- Press Win+P and choose PC screen only.
- Relaunch captions and drag the box freely on the single display.
- Reconnect your monitors one at a time, repositioning the box after each.
Fix 6: Check for NPU driver freezes behind the UI
When the whole caption UI is frozen — not just dragging, but buttons and text too — the problem may sit below the window in the AI pipeline. HP OmniBook Ultra owners have seen caption UI freezes trace back to the NPU driver; the HP OmniBook Ultra NPU driver issues guide covers that specific repair.
- Test whether the caption text still updates — if text is frozen too, suspect the pipeline, not the window.
- Update your NPU/chipset driver from your laptop maker’s support page (HP Support for HP machines).
- Also check Microsoft’s Windows support hub for known overlay issues on your build.
- Restart, launch captions, and confirm both transcription and dragging work.
Closing
A caption box that will not move is a window-state problem: a stalled process, stale coordinates, or a scaling hiccup. Restart the process, use Win+Shift+Arrow to rescue off-screen boxes, and cycle the display scaling to force a position recalculation. Once the box drags freely again, park it in a corner and pin it — and it will stay exactly where you left it for every future session.
