Acer laptops — Aspire, Nitro, Swift, Predator — all run the same Windows Night Light, and all of them can develop the same maddening symptom: the toggle flips, the schedule is set, and the screen never warms. On gaming models, switchable graphics add an extra suspect to the lineup. The good news is that every one of these causes has a reliable fix.
The usual Acer-specific contributors are straightforward: a generic graphics driver from Windows Update that lacks Acer’s display integration, the NVIDIA/Intel driver pair falling out of sync on switchable-graphics models, and the occasional corrupt Night Light registry state that affects every brand equally.
This Acer-focused guide covers the brand-specific checks first — graphics driver pair, Acer utilities — then the universal Night Light repairs that fix the rest. Work through these in order — diagnose first, then act.
Why this happens
- Generic graphics driver from Windows Update: Replaces Acer’s validated driver and can break Night Light’s display hooks.
- Switchable graphics driver mismatch: On Nitro/Predator models, Intel/AMD and NVIDIA drivers must cooperate; a version mismatch breaks color pipeline features.
- Corrupt Night Light registry state: CloudStore keys corrupt and disconnect the toggle from the feature — the most common universal cause.
- Acer display utilities overriding color: Game-mode color presets in Acer utilities can sit downstream of Night Light and cancel it.
- HDR enabled: HDR takes over color management and mutes Night Light’s effect.
- Custom ICC color profiles: Factory or custom profiles flatten the warm shift.
- Fast Startup caching bad state: Hybrid shutdown preserves broken display state across reboots.
- Location services disabled: Sunset-to-sunrise scheduling needs location access to trigger.
How to fix it
Work through these in order — diagnose first, then act.
Fix 1: Reinstall the Acer graphics driver (both GPUs if applicable)
The graphics driver is Night Light’s foundation. On Acer gaming laptops with two GPUs, both drivers matter — the internal display may be driven by either one depending on the model and mode.
- Identify your GPUs in Device Manager under Display adapters (Intel/AMD plus NVIDIA on gaming models).
- Download the graphics drivers for your exact Acer model from Acer’s support site.
- Uninstall each display adapter in Device Manager with driver removal checked, then restart.
- Install the integrated graphics driver first, restart, then the NVIDIA driver. As a secondary check, the Intel Driver & Support Assistant can confirm your Intel graphics driver is current.
- Open Night Light settings, set Strength to maximum, and test.
Fix 2: Reset Night Light’s registry state
When the toggle moves but nothing changes, the CloudStore registry data behind Night Light is corrupt. Deleting it forces a clean rebuild — the highest-success single fix for this symptom. The whole procedure takes under five minutes including the restart.
- Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\DefaultAccount\Current.
- Delete the Data subkey inside the key starting with default$windows.data.bluelightreduction.bluelightreductionstate.
- Delete the Data subkey inside the key starting with default$windows.data.bluelightreduction.settings.
- Restart and reconfigure your Night Light schedule and strength.
Fix 3: Disable HDR, gaming overlays, and Fast Startup
Three common interferers on Acer machines — especially Nitro and Predator lines where gaming overlays are always running. Clearing them isolates Night Light cleanly. Test Night Light after disabling each one so you know exactly which was responsible.
- Go to Settings, System, Display and turn off Use HDR.
- Disable any active game-mode color presets in Acer utilities (NitroSense display settings, if present).
- Turn off in-game overlays (GeForce Experience, Discord) while testing.
- Disable Fast Startup: Control Panel, Power Options, Choose what the power buttons do, uncheck Turn on fast startup.
- Shut down fully, wait ten seconds, power on, and test Night Light.
Fix 4: Remove conflicting color profiles
ICC profiles from factory calibration or past tweaks can mute Night Light’s warm shift. Removing them returns color control to Windows. Windows rebuilds a clean default profile automatically on the next restart.
- Open Color management from Settings search.
- Select your laptop display and check Use my settings for this device.
- Remove custom profiles, leaving the system default.
- Click OK and restart.
- Test Night Light at full strength. Compare notes with our Dell Night Light fix — the registry and profile steps are identical across brands.
Fix 5: Fix the schedule and location settings
Manual toggle works but automatic never fires? The scheduler is broken, not the feature. Location access plus a clean schedule entry fixes it. Patience matters here — give the new schedule a full day before judging it.
- In Night Light settings, disable the schedule and confirm Turn on now works manually.
- Enable Location services under Settings, Privacy & security, Location.
- Re-enable the schedule with Sunset to sunrise.
- If it still fails, use explicit hours (e.g., 9 PM to 7 AM) instead of location-based timing.
Fix 6: Update BIOS and test in a clean boot
The last resort layer: firmware display initialization and third-party interference. Rare causes, but they cover the cases that survive everything above. BIOS updates on Acer machines occasionally reset display-related firmware settings without notice.
- Check Acer’s support site for a BIOS update for your model — install only on AC power.
- Perform a clean boot (msconfig, hide Microsoft services, disable all) and test Night Light.
- If it works in clean boot, re-enable services in halves to find the conflicting program.
- As a final check, create a new local user account — profile-level CloudStore corruption can mimic system-wide failure.
- Our ASUS Night Light guide covers additional Armoury Crate-style conflicts in case an installed utility is the hidden culprit.
Closing
Acer Night Light failures come down to the same short list as every brand — graphics driver, registry state, color profiles, HDR — with switchable-graphics driver sync as the Acer gaming bonus round. Work the list in order and the warm shift returns; keep Acer’s validated graphics drivers installed and it stays. Once it is working, resist the urge to reinstall display utilities you do not use.
