Your ASUS laptop is running fine, the charger works, but the battery icon is simply gone from the taskbar. No percentage, no charging indicator — just empty space where it used to sit. You can’t tell at a glance how much charge you have left, which is maddening on a portable machine.

This is one of the least serious battery problems you can have, because the battery itself is fine. Windows just stopped displaying the icon, and in nearly every case a buried settings toggle or a confused taskbar process is the entire story. ASUS laptops are slightly more prone to it than average because MyASUS and Armoury Crate both touch power and notification settings during their own updates, occasionally flipping the Windows toggle without asking you.

Before you start, it helps to know which flavor of “missing” you have. If the space where the icon lived is simply empty, the icon is disabled or hidden and Fixes 1 through 3 will sort it. If there is a battery outline with a red X through it, Windows sees the icon but cannot read the battery — skip straight to Fix 4. And if the Power toggle itself is greyed out in Settings, something is actively blocking it, which Fix 6 addresses.

Why this happens

  • The Power system icon got turned off. Windows updates — and sometimes MyASUS updates — silently disable the Power toggle under system icons.
  • The icon is hiding in the overflow area. Windows 11 moved notification icons into the taskbar corner overflow, and the battery icon can end up hidden behind the little upward caret.
  • Windows Explorer glitched. The taskbar process occasionally loses track of system icons after sleep, hibernation, or a graphics driver crash.
  • The battery driver stopped reporting. If the ACPI battery driver fails, Windows removes the icon because it has nothing to display.
  • A policy disabled it. School, work, or family-managed ASUS laptops can have the Power icon disabled by Group Policy or MDM.
  • Armoury Crate or MyASUS power profiles interfered. ASUS’s own utilities sometimes reset notification area settings when switching power profiles.

How to fix it

Work through these in order — Fix 1 alone resolves the large majority of cases.

Fix 1: Re-enable the Power system icon

This is the actual setting that controls the battery icon, and it is the culprit most of the time.

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
  2. Scroll to System tray icons and click Turn system icons on or off (on Windows 10: Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Turn system icons on or off).
  3. Find Power in the list and switch it On.
  4. If it was already on, toggle it off, wait five seconds, and toggle it back on — this re-registers the icon. Microsoft’s Windows taskbar help documents these toggles if your Settings layout looks different.

Fix 2: Check the taskbar corner overflow

On Windows 11 the icon may be enabled but hidden, which looks identical to missing.

  1. Click the small upward caret (^) at the right end of the taskbar to open the overflow panel.
  2. Look for the battery icon inside. If it is there, drag it out onto the visible taskbar area.
  3. Alternatively, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar corner overflow and switch the battery/power entry to On so it always shows.
  4. Restart the laptop once so the placement sticks across reboots.

Fix 3: Restart Windows Explorer

When the taskbar process glitches, a restart re-renders every system icon cleanly.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. The screen will flicker for a second — that is normal.
  4. Check whether the battery icon has returned. If it appears but vanishes again after sleep, continue to Fix 4, because a driver is likely crashing on resume.

Fix 4: Reinstall the battery drivers

If Windows can’t talk to the battery, it hides the icon rather than showing a broken one.

  1. Press Win + X and open Device Manager, then expand Batteries.
  2. Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, choose Uninstall device, and repeat for any duplicate.
  3. Also expand System devices and check for an ASUS battery or power entry with a warning icon — update or reinstall that too.
  4. Shut down fully (not restart), wait ten seconds, and power on so Windows rediscovers the battery.
  5. Recheck the Power toggle from Fix 1 — it is often greyed out until the driver is healthy. If your icon shows an X after this, read our guide on the battery red X icon instead.

Fix 5: Check MyASUS and Armoury Crate settings

ASUS utilities can override Windows’ notification settings when applying power profiles.

  1. Open MyASUS > Customization (or Battery Health Charging section) and look for any taskbar or notification options that were changed.
  2. In Armoury Crate, check the active profile’s settings for anything touching system notifications.
  3. Temporarily quit both utilities from the system tray, then repeat Fix 1 to re-enable the icon.
  4. If the icon survives with the utilities closed but disappears when they run, update both apps from the Microsoft Store — ASUS fixed several notification bugs in recent releases.

Fix 6: Check for a policy disabling the icon

On managed machines the setting may be locked, which explains a greyed-out toggle.

  1. Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.
  2. Find Remove the battery meter — if it is Enabled, set it to Not Configured or Disabled.
  3. On Windows 11 Home (no gpedit), press Win + R, type regedit, and check HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer for a HideSCAPower value — deleting it (after exporting the key as backup) restores the icon. Note: only touch the registry if you’re comfortable; a wrong edit can cause bigger problems than a missing icon.
  4. Restart and verify. If this is a school or work laptop, ask the administrator instead — the policy may be intentional.

Closing

A missing battery icon on an ASUS is a display problem, not a battery problem. The Power system icon toggle brings it back in seconds for most people; the deeper fixes here cover the stubborn cases where drivers or ASUS utilities are fighting Windows for control of the taskbar. Once the icon is back, keep an eye on it for a few days — if it disappears again after sleep or after an Armoury Crate update, you now know exactly which setting to check first. If the icon vanished specifically right after a Windows update, our post-update battery icon guide covers the update-specific causes in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the battery icon disappear from my ASUS taskbar?
Usually Windows turned off the Power system icon after an update, or the taskbar corner overflow settings hid it. On ASUS machines, MyASUS updates and Armoury Crate power profiles can also toggle it. The battery itself is unaffected — this is purely a display setting.
The Power toggle is greyed out. What now?
A greyed-out Power toggle means the icon is disabled by policy or the battery driver isn’t reporting. First reinstall the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver in Device Manager, then check the toggle again. On managed or school laptops, an administrator policy may be enforcing it.
Will resetting the taskbar delete anything?
No. Re-enabling system icons and restarting Windows Explorer only affect the taskbar display. Your files, apps, and settings stay exactly as they are.
My battery icon is there but shows an X. Is that the same problem?
No — that’s a different issue where Windows sees the icon but can’t communicate with the battery. That points to driver or hardware problems rather than a hidden icon setting.
