You unplug your Acer to head to class or a meeting, glance at the taskbar for your battery level — and there’s nothing there. No icon, no percentage, no way to tell whether you have three hours or thirty minutes. The laptop works perfectly otherwise, which makes the missing icon feel absurdly annoying for such a small thing.
Small it may be, but it’s a legitimate usability problem on a portable machine. The fix is quick: in almost every case the icon was switched off by an update, and switching it back on takes less time than reading this paragraph. Acer’s own Care Center utility is a frequent accomplice here — its updates have a habit of resetting notification area preferences — so this guide covers both the Windows side and the Acer-specific side of the problem.
Why this happens
- A Windows update disabled the Power system icon. Feature updates occasionally reset notification area settings to defaults, and the battery icon is one of the casualties.
- Acer Care Center updates reset it as a side effect. Acer’s utility touches power settings during its own updates and has a history of flipping the icon toggle.
- Windows Explorer crashed or hung. The taskbar process renders system icons; if it glitches during sleep or a graphics driver hiccup, icons can vanish until it’s restarted.
- The battery driver stopped communicating. Windows hides the icon when the ACPI battery driver reports nothing — it won’t display a dead icon.
- Tablet mode or display scaling quirks. On 2-in-1 Acers, switching between tablet and desktop modes can drop taskbar icons until the next restart.
- A corrupt user profile. Rare, but a damaged notification-area cache in your Windows profile can swallow system icons persistently.
How to fix it
Work through these in order. Fix 1 fixes it for the vast majority of Acer owners.
Fix 1: Turn the Power system icon back on
This single toggle is the cause and the cure in most cases.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
- Under System tray icons, select Turn system icons on or off. (Windows 10: Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Turn system icons on or off.)
- Set Power to On.
- If it was already on, flip it off and back on — this forces Windows to re-register the icon. Microsoft documents this toggle on the Windows support site if your Settings screens look different.
Fix 2: Restart Windows Explorer
If the toggle is on but the icon is still invisible, the taskbar renderer is stuck.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer on the Processes tab, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- Your screen will flicker briefly — that’s the taskbar rebuilding itself.
- Check the taskbar. If the icon returns but disappears again after sleep, the underlying cause is probably the driver in Fix 3.
Fix 3: Reinstall the battery driver
Windows won’t show an icon for a battery it can’t read.
- Press Win + X, open Device Manager, expand Batteries.
- Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and choose Uninstall device. Do the same for any duplicate entry.
- Shut the laptop down completely — a full shutdown, not a restart — wait ten seconds, then power on.
- Windows reinstalls the driver during boot. Give it a minute, then verify the icon. If the icon appears with a red X instead, that’s a separate problem covered in our guide to fixing the battery red X icon .
Fix 4: Check the notification area overflow
The icon might be enabled but buried where you can’t see it.
- Click the upward caret (^) at the taskbar’s right edge to open the hidden icons panel.
- If the battery icon is sitting in there, drag it onto the main taskbar.
- For a permanent fix, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar corner overflow and set the power/battery entry to On.
- Restart once so Windows remembers the placement. Note that on Windows 10 the overflow behaves slightly differently — pinned notification icons sometimes revert after major updates, so recheck this setting after each feature update if the icon keeps wandering off.
Fix 5: Update Acer Care Center and check its settings
If the icon keeps vanishing after Acer’s utility updates itself, stop the cycle at the source.
- Open Acer Care Center and check for updates within the app, or download the latest version from Acer’s support site for your model.
- Look through its power and battery sections for any notification or taskbar options that may have changed.
- After updating, repeat Fix 1 to re-enable the icon.
- If you don’t use Acer Care Center’s tuning features, consider disabling its startup entry in Task Manager > Startup apps — fewer background utilities means fewer surprise setting changes.
Fix 6: Repair system files and test a fresh profile
For the stubborn cases where the icon refuses to stay, corruption is the suspect.
- Open an elevated Terminal and run
sfc /scannow, thenDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Restart afterward. - If the icon is still missing, create a new local user via Settings > Accounts > Other users > Add account and sign in — if the icon shows there, your main profile’s notification cache is corrupt.
- You can migrate to the new profile or reset the old one’s icon cache; either way, you’ve isolated the fault.
- As a last resort, an in-place Windows repair install (using the Windows 11 download page media, choosing Keep personal files and apps) rebuilds the shell without touching your data. If the battery itself is ever in doubt, checking battery health directly confirms the hardware is fine.
Closing
On Acer laptops the missing battery icon is almost always a flipped toggle or a stuck taskbar process — a two-minute fix, not a repair. Work from the Power icon setting outward, and you’ll have your at-a-glance battery level back before your coffee cools.
