Copilot Vision promises a genuinely useful trick: show Copilot your screen and get help with what is on it. But many users find the Vision button missing, the session failing to start, or Copilot staring blankly at a shared window. The causes are a mix of rollout availability, permissions, and app state — all fixable.

First, set expectations: Vision is a staged rollout, so “missing” sometimes means “not yet available to you” rather than “broken.” This guide helps you determine which case you are in, then fixes the broken one. If the Copilot app itself misbehaves broadly, our voice mode fix covers the shared audio/permission layer.

Check for the Vision entry point after each fix.

Why this happens

  • Feature not rolled out to your region: Vision availability varies; the button simply does not exist where it has not launched.
  • Copilot app outdated: Vision requires a recent Copilot app version from the Microsoft Store.
  • Screen capture permission denied: Vision needs permission to capture the screen or window.
  • DRM-protected content: Protected apps refuse to share their pixels with any capture feature.
  • NPU driver issues on Copilot+ PCs: On-device portions of Vision need the NPU; Intel users with driver trouble should see our Intel AI Boost driver guide .
  • Corrupted Copilot app state: A stale session cache blocks new Vision sessions.

How to fix it

Work through these in order — diagnose first, then act.

Fix 1: Check whether Vision is available to you yet

Do not troubleshoot a feature that has not rolled out. Confirm availability first.

  1. Open the Copilot app and look for the Vision icon or “Vision” entry point.
  2. Check the Microsoft Store for Copilot app updates — Vision needs a recent version.
  3. Review Microsoft’s announcements for Vision rollout regions (see the Windows support hub ).
  4. If your region lacks Vision, no local fix applies — wait for the rollout.

Fix 2: Update the Copilot app

An outdated Copilot app is the most common fixable cause of missing or broken Vision.

  1. Open Microsoft Store > Library and update Microsoft Copilot.
  2. Close the Copilot app completely and reopen it.
  3. Look for the Vision entry point again.
  4. If Vision appears but sessions fail, continue to Fix 3.

Fix 3: Grant screen capture permission

Vision cannot see what it is not allowed to capture. The permission prompt is easy to dismiss accidentally.

  1. Start a Vision session and watch for a permission prompt about screen capture.
  2. If you previously denied it, open Settings > Privacy & security and look for screen capture / screen recording permissions.
  3. Grant the Copilot app permission and restart the app.
  4. Start a new Vision session and share a simple window (like Notepad) as a test.

Fix 4: Share a compatible window

DRM-protected apps refuse capture by design. Testing with a plain app separates protection from breakage.

  1. Start Vision sharing a Notepad or Settings window — not a video stream or banking app.
  2. If Vision works there, the original app was DRM-protected; that is expected behavior.
  3. Avoid sharing full-screen exclusive games, which also block capture.
  4. Use window-share mode rather than full-screen share for best results.

Fix 5: Clear the Copilot app cache

A stale Vision session can block new sessions from starting. Clearing the cache resets the session state.

  1. Close the Copilot app fully.
  2. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Copilot > Advanced options and click Repair.
  3. If Repair does not help, click Reset (you will need to sign in again).
  4. Start a fresh Vision session and test with Notepad.

Fix 6: Check the NPU driver (Copilot+ PCs)

On-device portions of Vision depend on the NPU. A broken driver degrades or disables the feature.

  1. Open Task Manager > Performance and confirm the NPU entry exists.
  2. If the NPU is missing or erroring, repair the driver before continuing.
  3. Intel users: our Intel AI Boost driver guide covers the most common NPU driver failure.
  4. After the NPU is healthy, restart and test Vision again. Voice-side issues are covered in voice mode not working .

Closing

Copilot Vision fails for three reasons: it has not reached you yet, it lacks permission, or the app/NPU underneath is unhealthy. Check rollout status, update the app, grant capture permission, test with a compatible window, clear the cache, and verify the NPU. Frequently asked questions

What is Copilot Vision?
Copilot Vision lets the Copilot app see your screen (or specific app windows) and discuss what it sees — explaining a chart, helping with settings, or reading content aloud. You opt in per session; it does not watch your screen continuously.
Why is Copilot Vision not available on my Copilot+ PC?
Vision rolls out gradually by region and requires the latest Copilot app. If the Vision button is missing, update the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store and check that your region supports it. It also requires opting in — Vision never enables itself silently.
Does Copilot Vision work with every app?
No. Vision works with supported apps and the general screen-share mode, but DRM-protected content (Netflix, some banking apps) is blocked by design. If Vision fails only in one app, that app is likely protecting its content.
Is Copilot Vision private?
Vision only sees what you explicitly share during a session, and you can stop sharing at any time. If privacy concerns are why you disabled something, make sure you did not also disable the screen-capture permission the feature needs — that would explain it not working.
