You had a long, useful conversation with Copilot on your laptop, and now it is gone — not on your phone, not on the web, nowhere. Or history syncs one way but not the other. Chat history sync failures feel like data loss, but they are usually account or settings mismatches: the conversations exist under a different sign-in, or the device stopped uploading.

The critical first question is whether the chats are missing everywhere or just on one device. Missing everywhere means they were never saved (signed out, private mode, or deleted). Missing on one device means a sync problem on that device. This guide covers both, in that order. Account-level Copilot issues often cluster — if the app is flaky generally, our lock screen Copilot fix covers a related symptom.

Check each device’s sign-in state before changing anything else.

Why this happens

  • Signed into different accounts: Laptop on account A, phone on account B — histories live separately.
  • Signed out silently: Token expiry signs you out without an obvious warning; new chats are not saved.
  • History disabled in settings: A privacy toggle turned off chat history saving.
  • Work account policy: IT policy disables history for organizational accounts.
  • App not syncing: The Copilot app’s local cache is stale or corrupted.
  • Network blocking sync endpoints: The chat works (different endpoint) but history sync is filtered.

How to fix it

Work through these in order — diagnose first, then act.

Fix 1: Confirm the same account on every device

History syncs per account. Two accounts means two separate histories, and this is the most common “sync failure.”

  1. In the Copilot app on your laptop, open settings and note the exact signed-in email.
  2. Do the same on your phone and in the web version.
  3. If they differ, sign out and sign into the same account everywhere.
  4. Wait a few minutes, then check whether history appears.

Fix 2: Verify history saving is enabled

Copilot can be set not to save chats. If saving is off, there is nothing to sync.

  1. In Copilot settings, look for chat history or privacy options.
  2. Ensure “Save chat history” (or equivalent) is turned on.
  3. Start a new test conversation and check whether it appears in history.
  4. If new chats save but old ones are gone, the old ones were never saved — they cannot be recovered.

Fix 3: Sign out and back in everywhere

Stale authentication tokens break sync silently while chat keeps working. A fresh sign-in fixes the token.

  1. Sign out of Copilot on the laptop.
  2. Sign out on your other devices too.
  3. Sign back in with the same account on each device.
  4. Start a test chat on the laptop and check whether it appears on your phone within minutes.

Fix 4: Check for private or unsaved sessions

Some Copilot entry points (certain in-private modes, some embedded experiences) do not save history by design.

  1. Recall where the missing conversation happened — was it in the main Copilot app or an embedded panel?
  2. Check whether you were in any kind of private or guest session.
  3. Going forward, use the main Copilot app signed in for conversations you want kept.
  4. There is no way to retroactively save a session that was never recorded.

Fix 5: Clear the app cache

A corrupted local cache shows stale history and blocks new sync. Clearing it forces a fresh pull from the cloud.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Copilot > Advanced options.
  2. Click Repair first and check history sync.
  3. If repair does not help, click Reset — export anything important first, since local state clears.
  4. Sign back in and let history repopulate from the cloud.

Fix 6: Check network and work-account policy

If chat works but history never syncs, the sync endpoints specifically may be blocked — or policy may forbid history.

  1. Test sync on a different network (mobile hotspot) to rule out filtering.
  2. If you use a work or school account, check with IT whether Copilot history is disabled by policy.
  3. Try a personal Microsoft account as a comparison — if personal syncs and work does not, policy is the answer.
  4. Microsoft documents Copilot data controls on the Windows support hub . Related account flakiness is covered in image generation not working .

Closing

Chat history sync fails at the account boundary: wrong account, signed out, saving disabled, or policy-blocked. Verify the same signed-in account everywhere, confirm saving is on, refresh the sign-in, and clear the cache. And remember the hard truth that makes prevention matter: deleted or never-saved chats do not come back, so keep the important ones somewhere safe. Frequently asked questions

Where is my Copilot chat history stored?
Copilot chat history is tied to your Microsoft account and stored in the cloud. When sync works, conversations from your laptop appear on your phone and vice versa. If history is missing everywhere, the chats may never have been saved; if missing on one device, that device is not syncing.
Why did my Copilot conversations disappear?
Disappearing chats usually mean you were signed out, using a different account, or in a private session that does not save. Copilot occasionally clears very old history during service updates. Check that you are signed into the same account on all devices first.
Does Copilot save history for work accounts?
Often not, or not the same way. Work and school accounts may have history disabled by IT policy, or route through different data controls. If personal-account history syncs but work-account history does not, policy — not a bug — is the cause.
Can I recover deleted Copilot chats?
No. Deleted Copilot conversations are not recoverable — there is no recycle bin. This is worth knowing before you clear history to ‘fix’ a sync problem; export anything important first.
