You type a prompt into Cocreator, click generate, and wait. Nothing appears. Or the spinner runs for minutes, an error flashes, or Paint returns a blank canvas as if you never asked for anything. The rest of Paint works fine, which makes the failure feel random, but prompt generation has its own chain of filters, models, and services that can break independently.
A prompt can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your laptop’s power. Content filters may block a word you did not realise was sensitive, the AI model may not have loaded, or Paint may have lost contact with the generation path it needs. Long, vague, or contradictory prompts also fail more often, because the model has too little concrete detail to work with.
This guide separates prompt problems from system problems, so you do not reinstall Paint for a prompt that simply needed rewording. If sound or wireless features are also failing, check the Bluetooth fix and the speaker crackling fix for wider driver issues. For model-specific laptop faults, see the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x AI problems guide as a related check.
Why this happens
- Prompt blocked by content filters: Words related to sensitive, trademarked, or unsafe content can silently block generation without a clear explanation.
- Prompt too vague or contradictory: Long prompts that ask for several conflicting things give the model no clear subject, so generation stalls or returns nothing.
- AI model not loaded: If the on-device model failed to load after a restart or update, Cocreator accepts prompts but cannot generate from them.
- Paint or Windows out of date: Older builds contain generation bugs and may use an outdated service path that no longer responds.
- Network or service interruption: Online generation paths need a working connection, and a brief outage looks identical to a prompt failure.
- Corrupt Paint data: Damaged app settings can break the generation button while brushes, layers, and image editing keep working normally.
How to fix it
Work through these in order — diagnose first, then act.
Fix 1: Test with a short, simple prompt first
This single test splits prompt problems from system problems in under a minute. Type a plain prompt such as a red apple on a white table, with no people, brands, or abstract concepts, and generate it. If the simple prompt works, your original prompt was the problem, and you can rewrite it. If even the simple prompt fails, the issue is Paint, the model, or the service.
- Open Paint and select Cocreator from the toolbar.
- Type a simple prompt: a red apple on a white table.
- Click generate and wait up to one full minute for an image.
- If it succeeds, your original prompt needs rewriting, not a repair.
- If it fails too, move on to the system fixes below.
Fix 2: Rewrite the prompt clearly and concretely
Good prompts are short, visual, and specific. Name one main subject, give it a setting and a style, and remove anything contradictory or abstract. Avoid brand names, real people, and sensitive terms, because filters block those even when your intent is harmless. Rewrite in stages, testing after each change, so you learn which part of the original prompt caused the block.
- Keep the prompt under about twenty words for the first test.
- Name one clear subject, a setting, and a simple style.
- Remove brand names, real people, and sensitive or ambiguous words.
- Replace abstract ideas with concrete visual details you can picture.
- Generate again and adjust one element at a time until it succeeds.
Fix 3: Restart Paint and reload the AI model
Cocreator’s model sometimes fails to load after a restart, an update, or a long session, leaving the generate button unresponsive. Closing Paint completely and reopening it forces a fresh model load, and a full laptop restart clears any stuck generation process. This simple step resolves many stalls that look like prompt failures but are really loading failures.
- Close Paint completely, including any background Paint windows.
- Wait ten seconds, then reopen Paint and select Cocreator.
- Try the simple apple prompt again before your original prompt.
- If it still fails, restart your laptop and test Cocreator immediately.
- Avoid opening many heavy apps first, so the model loads cleanly.
Fix 4: Check your connection and try offline generation
Online and offline generation use different paths, and testing both tells you where the break is. If you are online, check that Wi-Fi is stable and that no VPN or firewall is blocking Paint. On a Copilot+ PC, try disconnecting and generating offline, which uses the on-device model and bypasses service outages entirely.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is connected and other apps can reach the internet.
- Temporarily disable any VPN and test Cocreator again.
- On a Copilot+ PC, disconnect Wi-Fi and try the simple prompt offline.
- If offline works but online does not, the service path is at fault.
- Reconnect, restart Paint, and test online generation once more.
Fix 5: Update Paint and Windows to fix generation bugs
Generation failures are frequently fixed by updates, because Microsoft improves Cocreator’s models and service paths through Paint and Windows updates. An outdated build may send prompts to a path that no longer responds, which looks exactly like a blocked prompt. Update both, restart, and test with the simple prompt before returning to complex prompts.
- Open the Microsoft Store and install any available Paint updates.
- Go to Settings, Windows Update, and install all offered updates.
- Restart your laptop after both updates have finished.
- Open Paint, select Cocreator, and test the simple apple prompt.
- If it succeeds, rewrite your original prompt and test it again.
Fix 6: Repair or reset Paint and retry generation
When simple prompts fail on every path, Paint data or its system components may be damaged. Repairing Paint preserves your saved files and often restores generation, while a reset clears deeper corruption if repair fails. After either step, test with the simple prompt first, so you confirm the system fix before blaming a complex prompt again.
- Save any open Paint work to a folder before repairing the app.
- Go to Settings, Apps, Installed apps, Paint, Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for it to finish, then restart Paint.
- Test the simple prompt, and if it still fails, select Reset instead.
- After reset, update Paint, restart, and test generation again.
- For official guidance, see the Windows support pages and the Windows 11 download page if an update is needed.
Closing
A Cocreator prompt that generates nothing is usually either a prompt the filter or model cannot handle, or a model that never loaded. Testing a simple prompt first saves you from repairing a healthy system, and rewriting clearly saves you from blaming a broken system for a vague prompt. Once simple generation works, build your prompts back up slowly, one concrete detail at a time.
